Diabetes New Zealand
Established in 1962, Diabetes New Zealand is a non-government non-profit organisation that represents and supports people affected by diabetes by:
- Providing local support for people affected by diabetes.
- Acting as an advocate for people affected by diabetes.
- Raising awareness of diabetes, especially interventions that will prevent Type 2 diabetes or reduce diabetes complications.
- Educating and informing people about diabetes, its treatment, management and control.
- Supporting research into the treatment, prevention and cure of diabetes.
Diabetes New Zealand has a National Office (based in Wellington) and branches across the country. Branches provide local support and information for people affected by diabetes.
New Zealand Society for the Study of
Diabetes
The New Zealand Society for the Study of Diabetes (NZSSD), is an incorporated society that is open to those involved in the care of people with diabetes. It has over 400 members including diabetes specialist physicians, diabetes specialist nurses, podiatrists, dietitians, ophthalmologists, general physicians, family doctors, community health workers and allied industries.
NZSSD is the national advisory body on scientific and clinical diabetes care and standards.
NZSSD’s objectives are to promote the study of diabetes and the best standards of care of diabetes in New Zealand. It also provides the national reference source in the subject.

Aotearoa College of Diabetes Nurses (ACDN)
The Aotearoa College of Diabetes Nurses is a specialty college of NZNO dedicated to supporting a network of nurses who have a special interest in or who specialise in the clinical management and education of people with diabetes. The section represents a nursing membership working in a variety of settings nationally. Its main aim is to promote excellence in Diabetes Nursing in NZ through the development of clinical practise frameworks, policy, education and research.
The ACDN undertakes leadership activities such as contributing to health policy, promoting evidenced based practise, establishing a clear educational pathway for nurses working in diabetes, promoting and supporting diabetes nursing professional development and promoting collaborative relationships between primary and secondary care to enable diabetes nurses to identify and meet the needs of people with diabetes across NZ. By engaging in these activities, the ACDN is nationally recognised as a leading voice in diabetes nursing.

Refract Group
Refract Group facilitates opportunities for collaborative value creation by, with and among people with diabetes, their families and health professionals by designing engagement processes that are human centred, and meaningful to those who share their use. Refract Group provides and supports engagement and provides online technologies integrated with offline tools that facilitate and leverage knowledge sharing for the benefit of healthcare professionals and self-care for people with diabetes and their families.
